Asteroid 2002 NT7
This asteroid, discovered on 9th July 2002, grabbed the headlines when it was announced that it could collide with the Earth on 1 February 2019. The chances of it doing so were calculated by NASA to be 6:1,000,000 and by others as 16:1,000,000.
More refined calculations/observations showed that the body would miss the Earth altogether in 2019, but a small risk remained of it hitting the Earth in the year 2060. It is expected that further observations will prove that the asteroid will not hit the Earth at all in 2060, but at the moment a small risk does remain. Bookmark this page for more information.
It is estimated that 2002 NT7 is 2 km (1½ miles) across.
