NEVER look at the Sun, especially through a telescope. Even looking for prolonged periods with the naked eye can be dangerous. BLINDESSS CAN (and often does) RESULT. There are special techniques used by astronomers to observe the Sun - consult reliable books on the subject.
The Sun does not have a 'surface' as such, but the disc we see in the sky - what is commonly referred to as its 'surface' is in fact its photosphere. Dark spots, known as sunspots, can sometimes be seen on the photosphere. Although these are hot - they are cooler than the surrounding area and thus appear dark. This group of sunspots, photographed in September 2003 is called sunspot 464, is about as wide as fifteen planet Earths lined up in a row.
